Treaddur Bay 08/08/09
We left Liverpool in the bright sunshine looking forward to a sunny days diving. Arrived on Anglesey to find half the Island in cloud. Upon arriving at the dive shop found the reason for the cloud, Paula and Trevor! The curse of fair weather divers everywhere. (VERY FUNNY PAUL )
A total of 8 club divers made it that day and one of Dave’s diving son-in-law’s.
We successful caused an obstruction on the road whilst we waited for the dive shop car park to open. After getting a bit fed up with the stares from passing motorist I went to see if we could persuade the gate to open, only to find it wasn’t locked anyway! After some discussion we decided we’d be ok to park and proceeded to file in, just in time for Joyce the owner of the dive shop to turn up. The sun was happily breaking through the clouds during the morning; maybe the curse was finally lifted. The usual discussion of wet/dry suit appeared as Trevor and Paula had opted for the wet.
We split ourselves in to three groups, to ensure that there was a good mix of experienced and inexperienced divers. Each group headed their separate ways.
We all left the beach in front of the dive shop and headed out. Dave and his son-in-law headed left through the channel out into the open coast. Paul, Fiona, Trevor, Paula and Terry headed straight out and the other group went a similar route but went out further. All groups were using SMB due to the high amount of boat traffic in the area (there was a small sail boat race on).
Our group surface swam to the marker buoy in the small bay, checked buoyancy, got our bearings and headed out towards the reefs and deeper water. What was surprising was the quality of the vis somewhere around 10m. As we ambled along searching through the algae beds, rocky out crops etc, we were disappointed to find there was little life about. There were a variety of fish, right from juveniles through to adult, here and there but very little evidence of anything else, and no crabs. The odd sea gooseberry floated past and Fiona found the shell of a good-sized spider crab.
During the dive the sea had got a bit choppier and the surge was moving dead algae across the seabed, causing Trevor and a few other to get a bit disorientated and feeling unwell. At this point it was decided to return to the bay to end the dive. However, due to some fine navigation from Paul we were already back in the bay, and had the chance to investigate the area a bit more. Everyone had enjoyed the dive and Trevor even got a few photos. Despite a few leaks in the dry suits everyone enjoyed the dive.
All the divers returned safely from the bay and Dave reporting finding much more life on the open coast area. Including large lobsters, although they were in lobster pots.
Only three decided to do a second dive, although they got a bit lost coming back to shore, exiting in the next little bay, they reported as having another very nice dive.
We’d like to thank Joyce and Mike of The Diving Services (Anglesey) http://www.ateal.co.uk/dsa/index.html for their assistance with weather reports and making us all feel like long lost friends.
